It's 2:47pm on Sunday afternoon, 7th March 2021 and I'm about to miss the opportunity of a lifetime. I have computed a hypothetical journey into Transport NSW's Trip Planner; getting from St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney to Mystery Bay, which is a coastal area in NSW to visit my friend, by public transport. The journey that gets me there earliest begins 3 minutes from now and is detailed below. If you examine the itinerary carefully, there is a critical flaw somewhere. Let's see if you can find it.   Here's my journey to Mystery Bay:   2:50pm Walk 10 minutes from St. Mary's Cathedral to Castlereagh St

As I always say, 'all advice is bad advice'.   Because no matter how smart or 'successful' they are, no one is you.   Therefore, they can't give you perfect advice. Almost no one effectively contextualises the advice they give to your situation.   The social media influencers give young people the first steps to becoming like them. Business people give young people the first steps to becoming like them.   Coders believe everyone should learn code at school, philosophers believe everyone should learn philosophy at school. Parents instruct their children to complete the narratives they could never close out, more often than they sit down and do Interest

This is Warren Buffett and Charles T. Munger. If you've never seen or heard of them before, they're two of the most famous investors of all time, and their partnership has lasted 62 years. They were introduced at a dinner party by a mutual friend who thought they'd get along in 1959.   They form one of the most powerful partnerships of all time, and they show us the importance and impact that the right people can have on your life.   The Impact   I can't really comment on the impact Buffett has had on Munger, or vice versa. I'm not privy to their inner circles.

What is the best way to sing?   What is the best way to sing? Beyonce Knowles sings very differently to Barbara Streisand, who sings differently to Freddy Mercury, and his singing was very different to Adele's. Each has risen to great heights by doing things their respective way.   So what's the best way to sing? What's the consensus?   What is the best way to steer a soccer team to victory?   Pep Guardiola’s teams hoard possession, press hard and break teams down. And they’ve won it all. But then there’s Jose Mourinho’s teams who are the stark opposite. They're defensively tight, less sexy, less glamorous. They’ve won

When I was in my late teens, I didn’t really understand that entrepreneurship could be a path for me. It just seemed like this thing Richard Branson (creator of Virgin) did. It didn’t seem accessible even though I read his book and learnt about his story.    I remember another moment when I was at university studying psychology. We did this unit on consumer psychology and I thought about how fascinating that would be as a career path, but I was in a bind. My dream had been, for however long, to be a filmmaker and not a psychologist.    I looked at these

It became clear to me recently how important priorities are. There are always a range of values and important ideas we hold at once - but how do we manage the competition and tension between values, ideas, and the things we want to achieve?    What do you do when you can’t have it all? When forced to decide between two priorities that come head-to-head?   This got me thinking about how I rank my priorities. These priorities direct decision-making and the energy which I give to all the different items in my bucket.    I listed some of the important things I value that determine

How does one run an Apocalypse Test?    One simply imagines that tomorrow the apocalypse begins - this is an event of catastrophic destruction which interrupts most or all social systems.    We run the hypothetical Apocalypse Test to ask ourselves what still matters when everything we’ve taken for granted is threatened and interrupted.    Things that do not pass the Apocalypse Test.    Social media followers no longer matter, because our digital systems have fallen.    The stock market no longer exists. Your ownership of your assets is now contestable - you will struggle to defend your claim to a single deed of land, as the deeds you signed

Imagine you are part of the ocean. You are part of one gigantic force - but you cannot see the extent of yourself, how far or wide you stretch. You can only see your section of the ocean, and so in your eyes, that is all that exists, and it is also all of you.   But as you move you begin to head towards land   And as you see yourself change position in relation to the land, you begin to notice that you are not everything you see. You suspect that you are the ocean, and that everything else is

Though I’m a staunch critic of education and schooling, my own time at school was an amazing experience overall. The thing I loved most was the sense of community and being able to see around a hundred people I genuinely loved every single day.    It Was A Great System   The beauty with school was that I never had to arrange to see people. It just happened.    We all showed up to the same campus five days a week and for sport on Saturdays. Our lives were beautifully interwoven as we did a whole range of activities together; I had some friends I did
